Janov Pelorat fremeva: i suoi dogmi erano stati sconvolti. Chiese di incontrare subito Golan Trevize. La notizia che doveva dargli era troppo elettrizzante. Aveva scoperto che la lingua parlata da quei bizzarri edonisti non discendeva dal Galattico Standard, ma che molte sue parole potevano spiegare termini dotti, ormai conosciuti solo dagli scienziati della Fondazione. La guardia civica lo lasciò passare e gli indicò la strada per gli alloggiamenti. Distratto com'era, Janov se la dimenticava sempre. Non amava i labirinti. La lingua, che a quanto pare era chiamata Hellingloss dai suoi parlanti, aveva una sonorità simile a quella del Galattico, ma il suo lessico di base era del tutto incompatibile. Era scritta con una strana e incerta ortografia. Aveva compilato una lista disordinata assieme ai suoi informatori, elencando vocaboli Hellingloss con la traduzione nella più antica forma ricostruibile della lingua universale.
